The city of Barcelona lies within the region of Catalonia. Catalonia, once independent, was acquired by the Spanish state in 1714. That means that this year marks the 300th anniversary of the Catalonians losing their own rights and constitution. Every year on September 11th the Catalonians celebrate "La Diada Nacional de Catalunya" in remembrance of their heritage and homage to the leaders who defended the city. The day is full of cultural events, concerts, and public demonstrations, and no one works. Everyone is out on the streets clad in red, yellow, and blue- the colors of the independentist Catalonia flag. There are flags hung everywhere (this can be seen any day of the year but especially so on this holiday). There are some groups of people who still want the independence of the region, and they will vote in November to demonstrate this to the Spanish government-- but there are no immediate worries of the region's secession as this happens literally all the time.

independiente, fue adquirida por el gobierno español en 1714. Eso significa que
este año es el 300o aniversario de la perdida de los derechos y constituciones
de los catalanes. Cada año en el 11 de septiembre los catalanes celebran
"La Diada Nacional de Cataluña" para recordar su cultura y los
lideres que defendieron la ciudad. Este día esta lleno de eventos culturales,
conciertos, y demonstraciones publicas, y nadie trabaja. Todos salen a la calle
vestidos de rojo, amarillo, y azul- los colores de la bandera independentista.
Hay banderas colgadas en todos sitios (cosa que no es extraño durante el resto
del año pero se nota aun mas en esta fecha). Hay todavía grupos de gente que
quieren la independencia de la región, y votaran en Noviembre para demostrárselo
al gobierno-- pero no hay preocupaciones inmediatas por la secesión de la región
por que esto pasa todo el tiempo.
